Diabetes UK – Food Upfront is the fight for clearer food labelling

Last year, thousands of you told us that food labelling was too confusing. We listened, and we’re asking the UK government to listen too.

Evidence shows that clear food labels help us make better choices and give us more control over the food we buy. For people with diabetes, knowing how many carbs, calories and sugars there are in just one meal can be crucial.

Yet food labelling is not compulsory, and 1 in 3 food products don’t have front-of-pack labels at all. This is making it harder for everyone, with or without diabetes, to stay healthy.

Let’s change this. Sign our Food Upfront petition for clear, consistent and compulsory food labelling.

We want compulsory, clear and consistent:

  • Front-of-pack traffic light labelling on all pre-packaged foods sold in the UK.
  • Calorie labelling in key restaurants, cafes and takeaways, with carbohydrate content available online or when requested in store.
  • Carbohydrate content labelling on products per portion or per individual unit as prepared.

On 18 April, Diabetes UK will be in Westminster telling politicians how unclear labelling in restaurants and supermarkets is making managing diabetes harder than it needs to be. We’ll also ask them to add their name to the petition.

You can help by asking your MP to attend our event. As their constituent, your voice can make all the difference.

Standard Policy for Insulin Pumps at Airport Security

Hospitals and insulin pump manufacturers advise that the electromagnetic radiation used by x-ray screening for carry-on or checked luggage and full-body airport scanners may interfere with the motors of insulin pumps resulting in a potential impact on insulin delivery.

Our aim is for airport security officers to recognise that insulin pumps are medical devices that should NOT go through x-ray machines or full-body airport scanners and should be subject to alternative security screening (for example via a wand inspection to test for traces of explosives) and that failure to do so could swiftly cause medical consequences.
